Elijah to James

I was mentioning yesterday that it seems every week this summer we see some faces back of folks who’ve been on the road, and at the same time there are a few familiar faces missing as they go on the road. I hope you are enjoying your summers and that the vacation time is relaxing and allows your family important time together. We want you to know that we miss you worshiping with us when you are gone, though.

Yesterday we finished up our a 10-week series on the life of Elijah. I hope it was helpful. I know I learned a lot from preparing the sermons, and I was pleased with a few of them. Yesterday was the account of Elijah passing his mantle to Elisha and leaving in the dramatic fashion of a fiery chariot and a whirlwind. We thought about the legacy that Elijah left behind him, and I challenged us to think about the legacy we are leaving.

As is the discipline I follow, we will now be looking at a New Testament book in our worship time. For the next few weeks, we will be in a short series on the book of James. There is more than one James that is named in the New Testament. This letter is thought to have been written by James, the brother of Jesus, who is sometimes called “James the Just.” He was a leader of the Christian community in Jerusalem at a very early stage in the development of Christianity there. This letter is focused strongly on practical Christian living even in a difficult context. I think this series will challenge us to think specifically about some aspects of our Christian life.
