Opportunities

The old saying is, “opportunity knocks but once.” The meaning is that when an opportunity comes our way it is best for us to take advantage of it. There is no guarantee that a missed opportunity will come our way again. This is important for us to remember as individuals and as a congregation.

Over the past several weeks we’ve witnessed tragedies, and natural disasters that are mind-boggling. In response, I’ve encouraged us to think of practical ways that we can demonstrate God’s love to those around us. What opportunities do you have to show God’s love to your family, your neighbors, and in your work? Let’s make the most of these opportunities while they are available to us.

As a congregation, we constantly have opportunities as well. When we look at the history of North Danvers Mennonite Church, we can think of it as a series of opportunities to which the people of this congregation responded. From the beginning of this congregation, to its first building, through the additions and changes that have been made to the structure, all the way to the various ministries and outreach that this Church has been involved in, it was the congregation deciding in faith to take the opportunities before us. What opportunities lay before us as a congregation that are waiting to be seized?

“Opportunity knocks but once,” is not a Biblical proverb. The Bible does say, however, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV 2011). Let’s make the most of the opportunities before us.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to take up an offering for Lowell and Sheri Glick, our missionaries to Mexico. They have been doing good work in Mexico for some time. They sent this message yesterday to share during the worship service, and I want to share it again: “we send our greetings from Mexico and thank you so much for your support, it is so appreciated. And keep up the good fight. Blessings on all, Lowell and Sheri.” Let’s continue to be faithful in our prayer and financial support for the Glicks.

Next Sunday after service, the Mission Kids will give us an opportunity to help support the Compassion International child they support whose name is Luis. Come prepared to give in order to help them in this important ministry.
