Giving Thanks in All Things
This is the week that we think about gratitude in the United States more than any other week of the year. This Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day is a time to think about all of the things for which we are thankful. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul wrote: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus,” (NIV).
Being grateful for what God has done for us helps us appreciate our blessings. Even in the most difficult of times, we have so much to be thankful for. Can I encourage you to take some time this Thursday to express gratitude for what we have—especially for those things we sometimes take for granted.
It was good to see so many in the worship service yesterday. The potluck was well-attended also. It’s always nice to spend some time around tables talking to one another. On top of it all, of course, was the wonderful food and lots of desserts!
Next week is the first week of Advent as we look forward to celebrating the birth of the Messiah. The series this year is “A Family Christmas.” We’ll be looking at Jesus’ genealogy in Matthew 1. It will be a reminder that when Jesus became flesh he was born into a real family—just like ours—and he had real ancestors—just like ours. Make plans to be there each of the weeks of Advent—I think you’ll be blessed. We have special music planned each week and special readings. Also take a few moments to invite some friends along who may not have a church home. This time of year, many peoples’ thoughts turn toward God. It’s a good time for us to reach out.
This Thanksgiving week, I want to say that I am thankful for all of you.
God bless, Brian
