God at Work and Harvest time

Our new sermon series from 1 Samuel is called “God is at Work.” I think that harvest time is a good time to think about the way that God works. When the seed is planted, it lays in the ground for a while until you see the first sprouts appear. Then the growth doesn’t happen all at once. If you tried to watch the plant grow, you’d soon get bored. Yet day after day we can notice the plants getting bigger. It’s also a long time between the first planting of the seed and the time when the crop is finally ready for harvest.

That kind of how God works in our lives. Sometimes we may not think anything is happening at all, or we may think that things are happening very slowly. All the time, however, God may be preparing a harvest. The Scriptures talk a lot about the law of seedtime and harvest. Remember Jesus’ teaching: “But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (Matthew 13:23, NIV 2011). God is always at work, but sometimes in ways that seem slow to us, or hard for us to understand. The harvest is a sure sign and a reminder that God was at work all along.
