Why do we worship?

I’d like it if you’d give some thought to this question this week: why do we worship? The spiritual discipline we’ll be looking at for this week is worship. Worship is another one of those parts of our faith, like prayer, that we simply accept as a part of it. But I wonder if you’ve considered why we do it? What are we doing when we worship? I ask this, because most of the concerns we express about worship are about the form our worship takes. Perhaps if we thought some about the why of worship, it would help us answer questions about how.

The other point I’d like to be clear on is that worship can take many forms. It’s not simply what we do during what we call the “worship service,” but there are many ways that we can express worship. Worship is something that we can do together, but it is also something that we can do alone. Do you remember what Paul said in Romans 12:1? He wrote, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship,” (NIV). What would it look like for us to live lives of worship? What difference would it make in our attitudes and in our perspective on the world?

It’s so hard to believe that by Sunday, it will be August. Thanks to those who have been helping out here in person on Sunday mornings. Thanks to those who attend willingly following the recommendations which the Church board has asked us to follow. Thanks also to those who have continued to make good comments about our efforts to make our worship services available to those who are joining in worship via live-stream. As always, this is such an important time for us to continue to work together.
