Setting Forth the Truth

Did you ever see the movie Liar, Liar? It’s the one where Jim Carrey plays a lawyer, who is also a habitual liar. When he breaks another promise to his son by missing his birthday party, his son makes the wish that his Dad wouldn’t tell a lie for one whole day. When that wish comes true, Carrey’s character finds himself unable to do anything but tell the truth. Of course, hilarity ensues.

It's interesting to think about how our lives might change if we were in the same circumstances. Maybe not at all, maybe a great deal, but perhaps at least a little bit.

Truth is a major theme in Scripture. In the passage we’ll be looking at Sunday Paul writes,

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

(2 Corinthians 4:1-2, NIV)

For a follower of Christ, it’s not just about not lying. We are called to speak the truth. There’s a difference. Paul describes it here as “setting forth the truth plainly.” That’s a part of the call of a Church in Action.

Remember that Sunday following our worship service will be having our first potluck of the Fall! You won’t want to miss it, so come prepared to spend some extra time with your Church family. Also, try to think of someone you can invite to come along with you.

God bless,

Brian
