Keeping Perspective

In the Christian life it’s important for us to keep a proper perspective. Many of the voices we listen to pull our focus toward events that are discouraging. Paul suggests that it is important to keep focused on things that will encourage and strengthen our faith. He said to the Christians at Philippi:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4:8-9, NIV 2011).

This Scripture encourages us to keep our focus on the truth that will encourage us. Too many times, though, I know I get caught up in the day-to-day and forget to keep my focus on the kinds of things listed here.

Things that happen in our lives can help us regain perspective. I mentioned in the worship service yesterday that two sudden, tragic deaths had impacted me. A college friend of mine had died suddenly in a car accident, and a close friend’s mother had been hit head-on and was killed. When tragedy like this occurs, it reminds us of what is truly important. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow, so what is most important for us to focus on today?

In Christianity, the yearly calendar can also be a way that we are able to regain focus. As we approach the Easter season, Lent has been a way that Christians have used for centuries to help us focus on what Christ has accomplished on our behalf. This coming Wednesday is called Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Some Christians choose to either abstain from something during Lent, or to take on an additional discipline or practice during this time to remind us that we are approaching the time when we remember in a special way Jesus’ sacrifice for us. It again helps us to keep perspective.

Remember that we have some special things upcoming. Our Uno Tournament is next Sunday at 5pm. This is a great time for people of all ages to come together and have some fun and fellowship. Make sure to invite some friends. Let us know at the Church office if you’re coming and haven’t signed up. The Fellowship Team needs to know the number who’ll be attending in order to prepare appropriately.
