Super Monday

Several commercials during yesterday’s big game encouraged taking today, Super Monday, off work. And even though apparently 17 million of my fellow Americans are taking the day off, here sits your preacher—in the office. I’m joking, of course. I thought it was funny that the commercials were encouraging people not to work today. It’s always interesting to see what messages we are receiving.

In the adult Sunday School class as we continue to look at the Book of Revelation, we’ve been seeing how Christians in the first century were encouraged not to participate thoughtlessly in the what the Roman Empire was calling its citizens to do. Revelation 18:4-5 reads:

Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “‘Come out of her, my people,’ so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.” (NIV)

Some of the messages we receive as citizens of this nation and culture are bold and brash while others are more subtle. We must constantly be evaluating how living and participating in this society is impacted by our faith.

I do hope this is a Super Monday, but because of what we all can accomplish as God’s people in our families, at work, and in our lives, and not simply because we take the day off after a big game. Now, the first weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament? Don’t come looking for me! 😊
